2010 - Challenges and Optimsism.

2010 looks to bring new challenges to the UK and especailly the South West livestock producers and meat industry.  With challenges including the on-going battle of bTB to sheep EID now legislative.  Farm gate prices are continuing to be good, with lamb trade due to the strong exchange rate very strong.  However this could arguably be a disadvantage to the whole chain with retail consumption reduced due to the high price of lamb.  Beef continues to be a stable level of supply and demand with good farm gate prices.  But the costs of inputs are still high and farmers have the on-going challenge to become more efficient and stream-line their businesses further.

EBLEX have been defending the industry over the growing media pressure over the livestock industries affect on climate change.  EBLEX have just launched their first Climate Change Roadmap with adivce for the indsutry.  The main findings of EBLEX is that efficiency is key.  Efficient production systems will reduce GHG and climate change impact.

The SWRDA have indicated that by the Spring 2010 there will be some exciting projects being awarded under the RDPE funding pot.  The funds cover many rural issues from animal health, resource management and skills development.  If you would like more advice and guidance on how to access funds for your business or find out about these projects please contact MSW, REG or the SWRDA for more information.
