Who should attend?
·        Anyone wanting to improve their understanding of marketing and small business financial management.
  • Existing small and micro businesses.
  • Those hoping to develop an idea into a commercial reality.
  • Start-up phase for a diversification project.    
(Marketing aspects will offer specialist help for food and drink businesses or farm diversification projects)
 
What will I achieve? 
Practical and hands-on introduction to essential skills enabling you to bring products or services to market.
Practical understanding of common problems and simple realistic solutions. 
The course has two specialist tutors integrating practical financial and marketing knowledge leaving you with a set of skills to take back to your own business.
 
Day 1 - Financial Management 
  • Why small/new businesses fail and how to avoid the pitfalls.
  • Planning for success: sorting out appropriate and viable strategies.
  • Financial management – what you should know, focusing on pricing and costing methods, break even, cash flow and profit and loss.
  • Necessary administration and record keeping.
 
Day 2 - Marketing Skills
  • Identifying your market and customer and build a strategy to attract them. 
  • The difference between marketing and promotion and why both are important including a practical workshop on printed materials, image and advertising.
  • What should be done for free and what can be done for free.
 
Day 3 - Own Business Workshop - delegates are invited to bring a current project to work through.  There will be opportunities for small group discussions, and specific one to one help/consultancy from the tutors.  Aiming to consolidate what delegates have learned by putting it in to practice in their own business planning.  Day 3 will include an opportunity to revisit a topic or two in greater depth, and discuss sources of other business advice and support.
 
You will end the course with a Tool Box of Skills to use in your own business.  You will have learned from tutors who have experience of small business management, an opportunity to ask lots of questions and meet up with other business people with similar interests and issues.

                                                Deborah Richards: Crellow.   Having trained in farm administration Deborah married into 200 cows and a Cornish farming family!   Personal circumstances forced a sad move out of farming and she is now the marketing mind of one of Cornwall’s thriving niche food companies.  Her specialist food and drink consultancy uses a mentoring model to support small and micro businesses learn the business and marketing skills required to be independent, dynamic and successful. 
 
                                                Deb Edwards BA (Hons) ACA.   Chartered Accountant Deborah combines a passion for small business success with hands-on financial management experience. Working with enterprises across the county, Deborah leads Headland Accounting Solutions priding herself on delivering an approachable, straight talking consultancy making sense of financial matters to create successful businesses.
